The e-ATV has been a challenging and highly experimental project that fulfills the client brief of enhanced survivability, while providing insight into the decarbonisation and deployment of electric defence vehicles as the transition to low-emission transport gathers pace.

Enhanced Survivability

When the Defence Science & Technology Group got in touch to see if we could experimentally electrify an all terrain vehicle, we were equal parts excited and challenged about this project that has real-world application for brave Aussie defence personnel.

The result is an innovative and world-leading e-ATV prototype, providing enhanced stealth and manoeuvrability benefits.

Featuring independent wheel drive with maximum torque from standstill via a unique and custom designed tri-motor drivetrain, the e-ATV prototype was developed to meet strict requirements, primarily reduced noise and heat signature to mitigate risk of discovery while in the field.

Individually powered wheels also enable greater manoeuvrability and an improved opportunity for moving away from threats, even if one wheel has been damaged by an improvised explosive device (IED).

Hub Motor Technology

Independent wheel drive was unachievable with current hub motor technology, so every step of this project involved bespoke assembly, including a drive system utilising latest e-mobility componentry, with the aim of improving design over time.

This enormously challenging skunkworks project has resulted in a one-of-a-kind electric vehicle that was presented at the 2021 Army Innovation Day.

Our e-ATV prototype provides enhanced stealth and manoeuvrability benefits with independent wheel drive with maximum torque from standstill via a unique and custom designed tri-motor drivetrain.

This was an enormously challenging as this type of design doesn’t exist anywhere in the world. Our EV conversion team had to create a completely unique process that adapts components and technology to a one-of-a-kind electric vehicle.

Due to the unique design, it’s been exciting to align ourselves with local makers & suppliers who were able to share our vision & jump in with their expertise, despite demanding timelines.

How is it different to an electric ATV?

With the objective of enhanced survivability through independently driven wheels, the e-ATV utilises a 24kWh battery pack to enable startling power off the line, increased range and exceptional manoeuvrability. If the rear of the e-ATV is incapacitated, the front wheels can assist escape in emergency situations.

What’s the exportable power?

The e-ATV’s 24kWh battery enables the user to run tools and equipment in remote locations. Essentially, it’s a portable power station.

Which batteries were used?

In-house custom designed battery pack using LifePo4.

How many motors are there?

AC induction 50kW rear motor with dual 10,000W motors for independent front wheel drive.

What is the e-ATV range?

Up to 150-200kms, depending on usage and gearing.

How fast is it?

Speed is up to 60kmh which can be adjusted through gearing to suit requirements and purpose, such as rock crawling or driving through open plains.

How much does it cost?

As this is a prototype we’re unable to share the cost. However, future design iterations will reduce per unit cost over time.
